Composting with Red Wigglers

Recycling your food waste reduces the amount of garbage you produce and provides you with a lovely compost product.  Vermi-composting essentially means to compost with a worm bin. You are utilizing the worms to speed up the natural process of organic material decomposition. This  allows you to compost year round because the bins can be placed inside for the winter.

Worm Populations in Your Composting Bin are Affected By:

  • The amount of food provided

  • The amount of space

  • The amount of bedding versus worm castings

If your worms are in optimal conditions they will reproduce. After several months you may have enough to start a 2nd composting bin, share some with a friend, or go fishing-they are an excellent bait!

Worm Castings: The manure of worms are called castings. Castings added to house plants or garden soil provide plants with nutrients and improve the soil's aeration and drainage properties.

Compare regular soil to castings:
 Worm Castings
Calcium  1.5 times the calcium found in typical soil samples
Potash (Potassium)  11 times the potassium found in typical soil samples
Nitrates (Nitrogen)  5 times the nitrates found in typical soil samples
Phosphorus  7 times the phosphorus found in typical soil samples
Magnesium  3 times the "available" magnesium found in typical soil samples
Soil Conditioner  Help to break up the soil, improving drainage and air flow
